Press release distribution: Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham

Press release distribution in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham: newsdesk routes, sector angles, trade titles and timing around ONS data releases.

Press release distribution in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham means three separate newsrooms, three BBC regions and three sets of trade titles. The basics of sending are similar; the contacts, the angle and the timing are not.

What to take away

  • Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham sit in different BBC regions and serve different daily titles, so the pitch changes with the city.
  • Manchester pitches lead on product and jobs, Leeds pitches lead on figures, and Birmingham pitches need supply-chain or public-sector context.
  • Newsdesk routes are published. The Manchester Evening News carries a "Contact us" link in its site footer.
  • Direct newsdesk pitching costs staff time only; paid wire routes are priced per release and scheduled ahead.
  • Data-led stories land best the day after an ONS regional release, chosen from the ONS release calendar.

Three city media maps

Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham are separate media markets. Each has its own BBC regional service and daily title. A campaign that treats them as one block misses the desk that decides.

BirminghamBBC West MidlandsBirmingham, Black Country, Coventry, Solihull, StaffordshireBirmingham MailMidlands Business Insider; TheBusinessDesk West Midlands

Geography sets your first call. A Salford office is a Manchester story, while a Solihull supplier is a West Midlands story. The wider structure of national and regional outlets is summarised in Mass media in the United Kingdom, which is worth reading before you map a patch.

Newsdesk routes you can act on

Start with the title's own site rather than a bought list. The Manchester Evening News keeps a "Contact us" link in its site footer, which opens a form covering the news, sport and business desks.

BBC regional index pages link through to the BBC's central "Contact us" page. Pitch the newsdesk, not a named reporter who may have changed patch.

If you need a record of who you contacted, our guide to the lawful UK regional media list explains how to build one from published sources.

How each route works and how long it takes

Direct email to a newsdesk costs staff time and nothing else. Paid wire services charge per release, with extras for images and added words, so ask for the current rate card.

Lead time depends on the route. Send mid-morning and a newsdesk email can reach that day's online feed. Print has an earlier cut-off, and broadcast wants a spokesperson available the same day. Embargoed sends need at least two working days.

For the cost side of each route, see our press release distribution cost guide.

Sector angles by city

Manchester rewards speed and visual material. A product story with a clean image set and a named founder beats a long note.

Leeds rewards precision. A professional-services story needs job numbers and a commercial rationale in the first paragraph.

Birmingham rewards context. A manufacturing or logistics story needs one line on the wider sector and one on the local effect.

Example: one announcement, three pitches

Run the same sequence in each city, then change the sector language.

  1. Name the city and the patch in the opening line.
  2. State the sector angle in the second line.
  3. Add one number that matters locally, such as jobs in the city region.
  4. Offer a named spokesperson and a site visit slot.
  5. Link the source of any figure you quote.

A regional newsroom reads the first line and decides whether the story is its own. Write that line for the patch, not for the company.

Manchester: a software firm hiring twenty people is a jobs and skills story. Add a university partnership and it becomes a city-region story.

Leeds: a fintech opening an office is a growth story with a regulatory angle. Name the regulator — the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) — and say what the funding pays for.

Birmingham: a manufacturer winning a supply contract is a supply-chain story. Name the end customer and the local supplier network behind it.

For the wording itself, our media outreach email templates give a structure you can adapt to each patch.

Timing around ONS data

ONS regional releases give newsrooms pegs they already plan around. "Regional labour market statistics in the UK" is published monthly, while "Regional gross value added (balanced) by industry" is annual. Both appear well ahead on the ONS release calendar.

For city comparisons, the regional accounts break down gross value added and household income by region, which lets you compare the three city regions in one line.

Worked timing: the calendar shows a regional output release on a Tuesday. Send on the Wednesday morning, while reporters are writing follow-ups, and tie one line to the new figure.

Avoid Mondays for data-led stories, when desks plan the week, and Friday afternoons, when staffing is thin.

Common questions

Can I send one release to all three cities on the same day?

No. Stagger them, one city per day, so each newsroom can treat the story as its own. Keep one shared factsheet so the numbers match.

How do I find a newsdesk contact without buying a list?

Use the title's own site. The Manchester Evening News "Contact us" footer link is one example, and the BBC's central "Contact us" page is another. Check on the day you send.

Should an ONS-pegged story carry an embargo?

Only if you are working ahead of the release. If the figure is already public, send immediately. Otherwise agree the embargo and give at least two working days.

Which trade title should I add in each city?

Prolific North and TheBusinessDesk North West for Manchester, Yorkshire Business Insider and TheBusinessDesk Yorkshire for Leeds, and Midlands Business Insider and TheBusinessDesk West Midlands for Birmingham.
